Try adding more milk and vegetable oil. You want the biscuit dough to be really sticky. Also, handle the dough gingerly......Every baker develops what I call a "Baker's Touch" -- your mother could tell when to stop adding water and vegetable oil to the point when the dough "was just right".....She also handled the dough with a light touch.....She could do that through experience....you'll get that, too! Just keep practicing....
